Eco-tourism has become increasingly popular over the last few decades. Responsible tourism not only helps minimize the impact on environment, but also improve well-being of the whole eco-systems. A new booking platform GreenHotelWorld aims to make green traveling a new status quo and empower its customers to be part of the transition to a sustainable economic model.
The idea of creating GreenHotelWorld originates from the strong belief of the founders that “greening the travel industry will accelerate the transition to an economy based on both sustainability and profitability.”
Currently, GreenHotelWorld operates from 3 countries – The Netherlands, Switzerland and Spain. The platform enables travelers to search and filter more than 8000 hotels that embedded green practices into their operations.
The hotels listed on the platform are certified by more than 50 eco-labels: Fair Trade Tourism, Green Key, LEED, TripAdvisor Green Leaders to name a few.
The platform uses unique Green Rating algorithm that prioritizes hotels certified by high-quality eco-labels and puts them at the beginning of the list when customer is looking for hotels on GreenHotelWorld. Those hotels that are certified by lower quality eco-labels are at the end of the list. Green Rating algorithm also takes into account whether hotel’s green claims have been verified.
“There are many green hotel certification labels with different focus, quality and credibility out there. Our Green Rating algorithm helps the eco-conscious traveler to search and filter through these labels and select hotels based on their certified and verified green practices”, says founder of GreenHotelWorld Robert Boer.
The platform offers travelers an option to filter search results not only by destinations, eco-labels or price, but also by green practices: environmental protection, social responsibility, local resources, cultural heritage. These categories have been determined according to the standards introduced by the Global Sustainable Tourism Council.
But what really makes GreenHotelWorld different from other booking platforms is that GreenHotelWorld offsets CO2 footprint of all overnight stays of its travelers that booked through the platform for free. GreenHotelWorld partners with myclimate, one of the world’s leading providers of voluntary carbon offsetting measures, and contributes into projects aimed at poverty alleviation and climate protection.
As Robert Boer said, “At the end of each year, we ask myclimate to audit our bookings and determine if we have compensated sufficiently based on our estimated average of 26,6 kg per overnight stay. We are really happy with the projects myclimate has selected for us in India, Kenya and Nicaragua because they combine CO2 compensation with poverty alleviation.”
Through its partnership with Expedia, GreenHotelWorld offers travelers even more options to book hotels in desirable destinations. “We provide the eco-conscious traveler with a platform to filter more than 5200 hotels in 107 countries by their green practices. If you cannot find a green hotel in your preferred destination, we provide you with more than 120,000 other options through our partnership with Expedia. To assure you a green stay in these hotels as well, we compensate the CO2 emissions of all your overnight stays at no additional cost,” says Willem Blom.
GreenHotelWorld also demonstrates its strong commitment to sustainability by hosting its website with an environmentally friendly web hosting company GreenGeeks that allows to compensate for the polluting energy (that comes from burning fossil fuels) servers pull from the grid.
According to Jonas Casanova, leader of the Technology team at GreenHotelWorld, the platform aims to “make green traveling the new status quo and that next to location, price and availability, the hotel’s green practices become as important”.
