Women’s premium athletic wear brand Athleta launched its first collection of Fair Trade Certified™ apparel. Currently, the collection features 40 pieces, including the latest designs in some of Athleta’s most popular product lines such as the Sculptek Stealth collection and High Neck Chi tank, plus a range of tops and bottoms. Athleta aims to increase the number of Fair Trade Certified™ pieces to 100 by the end of 2017.
To create its new collection, Athleta partnered with Fair Trade USA, a nonprofit organization that promotes sustainable livelihoods for farmers and workers, protects fragile ecosystems, and builds strong, transparent supply chains through independent, third-party certification.
Athleta’s debut styles were produced in newly Fair Trade certified facility in Sri Lanka, where more than 80% of workers are women.
President of Athleta Nancy Green said, "Supporting women in their ability to come together to reach their full potential is core to our brand. Partnering with Fair Trade USA is an important and natural step in directly enabling the women who create Athleta clothes to positively affect their communities and families."
For every Fair Trade Certified™ garment sold, Athleta pays an additional premium directly back to people who made it. Factory workers then vote and decide how to use the funds to address important needs in their community. Besides, Fair Trade program prohibits child labor, ensures healthier and safer work conditions, and requires factories to adhere to rigorous environmental standards.
“We believe garment workers should be guaranteed basic human rights, and have the opportunity to thrive. That’s why we launched our first Fair Trade Certified™ Factory apparel in 2017,” emphasizes Athleta team.
Besides, Athleta has committed to choosing more recycled and sustainable fibers over traditional and non-recycled ones. Among the recent examples of Athleta’s strong commitment to minimizing its impact on the earth’s resources are its collections of clothing made from recycled polyester and organic cotton. “Here at Athleta, we believe the earth is our playground — and that’s why we’re committed to protecting it for the next generation.”
