We’ve all been there — putting effort into styling our hair for a long day out, only to see your reflection in a window with what looks to be a frazzled mess. A far cry from what you saw just before leaving home.

Hair care might seem like the trickiest thing. As much as some people can make do with a simple wash-and-wear routine, it’s not something that works for everyone all the time. The truth is, it’s all about putting just a little extra love into your hair treatments — and, yes, you can manage it even at home.

Frizzy, dull hair is an indication of dryness and damage. Hair looks for hydration, and when it doesn’t find it, the cuticles (the outer layer of your hair) rise to let moisture in. When there is excess moisture or humidity, this causes hair to frizz. Unfortunately, the constant dehydration damages your hair, leaving it looking dull.

Home Remedies

Tame the frizz in the comfort of your home with these natural, nourishing remedies. You don’t have to go too fancy with these easy-to-find ingredients.

Almond Oil and Egg Mask

First up on our list is an easy fix to the frizz. If it’s your first time hearing about this combo, fear not; these two ingredients pack an amazing punch of hydration to help soften and strengthen your locks.
Almond oil contains omega-3 fatty acids and Vitamin E, which help nourish and repair damaged scalp. Egg is rich in protein, and when applied to hair, actually repairs damage in the hair shaft, making it stronger.
Ingredients
 1/4 cup almond oil
 1 raw egg
Instructions

  • In a bowl, whisk together the egg and almond oil until well combined.
  • Take a small section of your hair and apply the mixture from root to tip.
  • Leave it on for 40 minutes, and then rinse with water.
  • Use a sulfate-free shampoo or conditioner to wash your hair.

For best results, apply once a week. If you have oily hair, use sparingly to avoid overhydration.

Avocado Mask

Looking for a fruity fix to the frizz? Avocado has omega-3 fatty acids and natural oils to give your hair that deep, long-lasting hydration it needs. It also has Vitamins B, C, and E to promote thick and healthy hair growth. Did we mention it also soothes an irritated scalp?
Ingredients
 1 ripe avocado
 1 tbsp. olive oil
 1 tsp. honey (optional)
Instructions

  • Pit the avocado and mash into small chunks for easy blending.
  • Combine avocado, olive oil, and honey into a blender. Blend until it forms a smooth paste. Add water to thin out the mask, if needed.
  • Apply to damp hair, making sure to cover the scalp.
  • Wear a shower cap or wrap your hair in a towel and leave it on for 30 minutes before rinsing.
  • Wash your hair with sulfate-free shampoo or conditioner.

For best results, apply once every two weeks or as needed.

Vitamin E and Coconut Oil Mask
A straightforward approach to treating your hair could also be going in with Vitamin E and coconut oil. These ingredients have properties to strengthen your locks and provide the protein it needs.
Ingredients
 1 part Vitamin E oil
 4 parts cold-pressed coconut oil
Instructions

  • In a bowl, mix both oils until well-combined and store in an air-tight container.
  • Apply 2–3 tablespoons of the mixture to your hair.
  • Leave in for up to 45 minutes before rinsing.
  • Wash your hair with a sulfate-free shampoo.

For best results, apply twice a week.

Maintaining the Mane

Now that you have a fix to all that frizz, you’ll want to get into some good habits to help keep your hair from turning into an unruly nest state. Here are some tips for maintaining that now-tamed mane.

Rinse your hair every two days

Not only does this help moisturize your hair, but it also avoids stripping off oils, which shampoos actually do. Pro tip: Turn down the temperature when you wash your hair to avoid the cuticles from rising and frizzing up your hair.

Find shampoo and conditioners that work for you

Your best bets are keywords like “moisturizing” and “hydrating.” Opt for gentle shampoos and conditioners with nourishing oils. Look for a straight intense conditioner enriched with argan oil to replenish dry and frizzy hair.

Invest in anti-frizz products

A good leave-in conditioner or hair serum can make a world of difference. It can give you that extra punch of moisture to protect and detangle your hair.

Taking Control of Your Locks
Fighting the frizz and dullness can be a challenge, especially when there are so many factors that can cause it — weather, nutritional deficiencies, or even excessive hair wash. Luckily, there are ways to keep your locks healthy and hydrated. It’s all about forming good habits with a sprinkling of these handy home remedies.
