reduce your carbon footprint

Uncontrollable wildfires are springing up more often; stronger hurricanes are occurring, and there are more deadly heatwaves in certain areas of the world. Climate change is happening, so taking on the following five ways to reduce your carbon footprint is a good thing.

Rethinking Power

The first thing you want to do is change your relationship to power. Most people rely on electricity, but the problem is your electricity was probably created with coal. You don't want to contribute to that, and you don't have to.

There are a few creative ways to change your power source. If you have the funds, you can install solar panels, which means you won't have to worry about those high energy bills anymore. If you don't want to do that now, why not consider hand-crank appliances like blenders, food processors, and much more. It'll require you to do a little more work, and you'll be using less electricity for the good of the planet.

Changing Transportation

The next thing you want to do is change your transportation method. If you are going somewhere nearby, instead of jumping into your vehicle, go ahead and walk there and back. Those traveling a little further should put on their cycling shoes so that they can travel by bike.

It should be pointed out that a regular vehicle is not the only thing you should try to give up. If possible, it’s a good idea to also stay away from power scooters or power bikes. Most of these items use some type of fuel, which will still add fuel emissions in the environment. You could even avoid using a fuel-powered lawn mower to reduce your footprint. For long-distance traveling, the train is generally more earth-friendly than a plane.

Supporting Local

Supporting a local business can help reduce your carbon footprint, yet it is something most people do not think about. That meat, eggs, vegetables, and fruit you buy from the store might have taken hundreds of miles to get to you.

That's a lot of gas to get the food to the store. You can start buying eggs from a neighbor who might have chickens in their backyard or consider purchasing your produce from a local farm. You are not only getting fresh items, but you are also reducing the amount of gas used to get the stuff you need.

Value Recycling

In this society, it is easy to think that once something is old it's time to replace it. The item being replaced may still be in good condition; it may still serve its purpose, but people just want something new. You should stop thinking that way, and keep things even if you think they are old.

The moment something does break down, consider fixing it instead of replacing it. If things cannot be repaired, make sure you go to a thrift store to replace whatever needs replacing. You can also buy gently used items online. Avoid buying new things as much as possible. The more you do this, the less you support large manufacturing companies that continue to pump toxic substances into the atmosphere.

Revolutionize Cleaning

The way you clean your clothes could be using up a lot of power. You can reduce that waste by simply revolutionizing the way you clean your clothes. The first thing you can do is replace your washing machine with an energy-efficient model. If you want to take things to the next level, you can wash some clothes by hand.

All you need is a bucket or a tub full of soapy water and something to help you agitate your clothes. Once you are done washing, be sure to air dry instead of using your dryer, which also uses a lot of power. Yes, it is going to be a little harder to wash this way, but at least you'll know that your carbon footprint will be lower.

These are some ways you can reduce your carbon footprint. Try a few to see how far you can take it. Don't worry if you can't do all of these suggestions. The goal is that you at least do a few of them.
