To start things off, recycling is one of the absolute best ways to help the environment. If we can use things multiple times, there is less of a need to create new products that fill up landfills. If you drink cans or bottles of soda, make sure to recycle these containers. In many states, you'll even get a small monetary reward for your time and effort. 

Consider keeping a massive bag of cans and bottles that you take to the recycling center every month. There are many other opportunities to recycle as well. As your children grow out of certain toys, donate them to charity so they can be reused. Even binders and pencils can be recycled and used for other purposes.

Shorter showers

Next, shorter showers save water. While it might be relaxing to lounge around in the shower for a few extra minutes, you have to realize that you are consuming many additional gallons of water. Water treatment facilities have to work overtime to keep up. Fortunately, it's very easy to set a timer that puts a theoretical end to your shower. 

When the timer goes off, wrap things up with the last few splashes of water. This principle can apply to other sources of water. When you wash your hands, turn the faucet off while you are scrubbing. Outside, turn off the garden hose while you are washing your car.

Plan driving routes

Plan out your driving routes whenever possible. On one hand, it will save you time as you're not wandering through neighborhoods without a sense of direction. At the same time, you'll consume less gas, which is good for the environment. If you're headed to a district you're unfamiliar with, use some sort of navigation device to help you find your way. 

Of course, you'll also save money on gasoline which is always a plus for your wallet. You might also consider an ebike that eliminates the need for gas altogether.

Start gardening

Gardening is one of the most rewarding hobbies out there. If you have room in your backyard, plant fruits, vegetables, and other shrubs. It's also a fantastic way to help the environment. Plants produce oxygen and consume carbon dioxide. It's an amazing cycle where plants and humans help one another. 

These plants also produce offspring and last for generations to come. Even a small garden has a huge impact on sustainability. There's nothing better than transforming a barren patch of dirt into a garden full of flowers and leaves.

Turn off lights

Last but not least, make sure to shut off lights when you're not in a room. It's not easy to do at first, but this habit can be formed without much effort. Consider sticky notes that serve as reminders wherever you look. You can also form rituals around bedtime and when you wake up in the morning. 

Once you brush your teeth, remember to turn off the bathroom light. When you head out for the day, turn off all the lights behind you. This will conserve electricity and reduce costs on your energy bill. It also reduces the amount of power you demand from the grid.


In conclusion, these are a couple of ways to create good habits and help the environment. Once you form these habits, there's no turning back at all. You'll be environmentally-conscious around your household and go green for the future of society.
